The patron saint of Ireland was actually a fifth century Irish bishop with the unlikely credentials for his position of having being born a Welshman.
During his teens he was abducted from his native Welsh village by marauders from the Emerald Isle and then taken across the Irish Sea to be kept in slavery. This ordeal he endured for six long years before executing an escape to Gaul, where he received a calling from God.
He became a monk and returned to Ireland as a missionary in AD432 to convert the pagan tribes to Christianity. Irish folklore has it that Patrick used shamrock leaves to illustrate his preaching of the Holy Trinity. This established the popularity of the tri-form leaf as the Irish emblem in preference to the more traditional harp emblem.
Saint Patrick is also reputed to have ridded the whole land of snakes, as they are completely absent from the Isle.
