Doctor Samuel Johnson was born right in the very heart of Lichfield in Staffordshire and is most famous for his work as a lexicographer, having compiled the first comprehensive English dictionary. He also wrote poems and biographies and left a legacy of profound sayings:
"When two Englishmen meet their
first talk is of the weather"
In addition, one of our best known traditional nursery rhymes was also penned by Dr Johnson:
"Curly locks, curly locks, wilt thou be mine?
Thou shalt not wash dishes,
nor yet feed the swine,
But sit on a cushion and sew a fine seam,
And feed upon strawberries, sugar and cream."
